History of Game Design

Game designers emerged as a major branch of game design in the 1970s following the enormous success of arcade games. They were responsible for designing all aspects of the game’s content, including characters, storyline and appeal. Game designing is a multimillion-dollar industry, and it’s expected to continue growing as technology improves. The timeline below shows how the industry has changed and grown over the years.

1952 – Willy Higinbotham develops what is often referred to as the “first video game”. This 2 player game is similar to table tennis. It was played on an oscilloscope.

1961 – Steve Russell, a student at MIT, creates Spacewars, an interactive game that can be played on mainframe computers.

1971 – Computer Space is the first arcade game to be released. It was developed by Ted Dabney and Nolan Bushnell (founders of Atari). It was immediately popular but many found it too difficult.

1972 – Magnavox releases Odyssey, the first home gaming system. Atari is established and quickly becomes a leader in the videogame industry. Pong, their first game, was hugely successful and became available for home use.

1974 – Steve Jobs (one of Atari’s engineers and later a circuit board designer) presented to the Atari founders an idea for a personal computer system. Bushnell recommended Jobs to a venture capitalist for funding support because funds were already tied up in other projects. This personal computer was, naturally, the start of Apple.

1975 – The first computer games hit the market. Gunfight was developed using a microprocessor rather than hardwired circuits.

1977 – The Atari 2600 console was released at a price of $249.95.

1978 – Space Invaders is the first arcade game to display and track high scores. The game Asteroids soon followed suit and allowed for three letters to be stored along with the highest scores. Visit:- https://joker123.tv/

1980 – Battlezone is the first 3D video game. The US Government was interested in the game and modified it to be used for training exercises. Companies form teams to address specific design issues due to the increasing complexity of video games. Soon, game designers and programmers were two distinct professions.

1981 – Electronic Games, the first dedicated periodical on gaming, proves its dominance.

1985 – Tetris was developed by a Russian programmer and released for arcades and video game consoles as well as home computers.

1989 – The Nintendo Game Boys handheld gaming device, the Game Boys, hits the market. Sega later releases the Genesis gaming console.

1994 – The Entertainment Software Rating Board was established in response to concerns regarding violence in games and marketing techniques. The packaging now displays a rating for games.

1995 – Sony launches the PlayStation in America. By 1997, there were 20 million units.

1996 – Arcades shift their focus away from traditional video games and towards more popular physical riding games like skiing or car/bike racing.

1998 – Sega releases the Sega Dreamcast, one of Sega’s last pulls that will remain on the market.

2000 – Sony’s PlayStation 2 debuts. Initial units of 500,000 sell instantly for $300 each. The Sims beat Myst to become the most popular PC game that year. To quickly create complex games, game designers work in teams of many to make them.

2001 – The “Next Generation” gaming system is introduced. The Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo GameCube not only make it more interactive, but they are also easier to create games for. Sega announced that it would no longer be producing hardware shortly after these products were released.

2004 – The Nintendo DS becomes a portable system. Sony follows suit a year later, releasing the portable version of their system, the Sony PSP.

2006 – The Nintendo Wii is a revolutionary console that mimics real physical movements like throwing a ball or swinging a tennis racket. The PlayStation 3 is also released in 2006, becoming the most expensive and sophisticated console.

2007 – Apple launches the iPhone, a completely new device that allows you to play video games.

2008 – Launch of the App Store. Games quickly became the most lucrative and popular “apps” due to their wide range of features. It is a growing niche in game design and development for Smartphone apps. Nintendo launches the Wii Fit video game in a successful attempt to get everyone involved with the Wii. With over 40 million sold units, Wii Sports was the most popular video game.
